5 European destinations for your autumn trip with a camper or caravan

Summer is the high season for holidaymakers. People prefer to combine their well-deserved holiday with summer weather and high temperatures. Ideal for lying on the beach, going for a swim or strolling around during a city trip. Many people therefore think, wrongly, that travelling is inextricably linked to good weather. If they do go on holiday in the off-season, often to avoid crowds, they choose far-away destinations where it is summer during our off-season, or where the weather is good all year round. On holiday you should mainly do what you want to do, so is this your thing? No problem. However, there are also other, lesser-known options in the off-season. Have you ever thought about a real autumn trip? You probably know how beautiful it can be: A gigantic vast forest, in a beautiful red, brown valley, covered by a thick layer of low-hanging mist. Or an endless coastline of rocks, where a strong wind takes over the sea. A coastline where it is not the intention to lie on a towel all day, but a long, brisk walk seems more appropriate. The gloomy autumn weather and the brown-yellow autumn colours that cover both the trees and the ground are a must on trips like this. Would you like to make a camping trip through these beautiful regions yourself, but have no idea where to go? Below we have listed 5 ideal destinations to visit this autumn. All destinations are within Europe, and can be reached by camper or caravan, but camping is certainly not discouraged either.

1. Scotland: Loch Ness Lake

Scotland has some very impressive tourist attractions. Some are better known than others. Think for example of the various islands full of green meadows and endless long lines of rocks on the coast. A very famous place is Loch Ness. The lake is of course known for the legend about the monster that is said to dwell there. Yet it is not often seen as a travel destination. What people often forget is that the entire area around the lake is at least as impressive as the lake and the legend itself. Moreover, it is easily accessible with a camper or caravan and there are many campsites nearby, including the beautiful, quiet and environmentally friendly campsite, Loch Ness Shores. In this area your campsite is a base, because the most beautiful places can only be reached after a brisk walk through areas where a car cannot go.

2. France: The Normandy coast

Perhaps an obvious choice, but also this famous coastline, where a brisk walk on the cliffs is more suitable than a lazy afternoon on the beach. Although Normandy is also beautiful to see in the summer, this is an example of a region that only becomes more beautiful in dark and gloomy weather. A thick layer of low-hanging fog only makes it better. For people interested in the history of the Second World War, this location is a must. Certainly also interesting for a camper or caravan, since there are a lot of campsites in the region. Don't forget to enjoy a delicious plateau de fruits de mer.

3. Slovenia: Lake Bled

Lake Bled is a beautiful lake that shines in every season. However, it is on this list for a number of other reasons. Around the lake lies a huge area of beautiful nature, consisting of forests, hills and mountains. The typical vast nature that is most pleasant in the summer, but most beautiful in the autumn. Not far from Bled lies Škrlatica, the second largest mountain in Slovenia. It goes without saying that it is not accessible by camper, but for people who like to combine camping with challenging hikes where not only walking but also climbing is required, this region is certainly something to note. After all, Slovenia is a small country. This means that even from Bled, which is located all the way to the north, you can quickly make a trip anywhere in the country.

4. Germany: The Black Forest

The Black Forest is so gigantic, so you can certainly choose between different tourist and less touristic attractions. What is certain is that the Black Forest contains a huge piece of beautiful nature, which, like most wooded areas, really comes into its own in the intermediate seasons. Due to the variety of tree species, large parts remain beautifully green all year round and other parts change into a beautiful color palette full of yellow, red and brown tones. Like most wooded areas, a dark cloud and a layer of fog are not a disadvantage here either, on the contrary. If you are with a camper or caravan, you have the opportunity to explore the entire vast area and travel from location to location. The most famous attractions in this region include: The Triberg waterfalls, The cuckoo clocks of the Black Forest, The source of the Danube, Lake Titisee and many others.

5. Norway: Wild camping in nature

No specific destination or attraction, but an ideal destination for the real campers among us. In Norway, wild camping is not only allowed, it is encouraged. On any piece of land that is not actively cultivated and that is further than 150 meters from inhabited land, you are allowed to pitch your tent or park your camper. Thanks to wild camping, you have the chance to get lost in the beautiful pieces of nature that the country has to offer. Nature in Norway undergoes a complete metamorphosis every season, which makes the country feel completely different in summer, autumn, winter or spring. Each season has its own influence on the beautiful surroundings. Remember: When wild camping, you are often in the middle of nature, so keep your surroundings clean and free of rubbish.
